From The Presidents Desk...
“By all accounts Surgeon General (nominee) Dr. Regina Benjamin is an extraordinary woman. She is an African-American family doctor who has spent most of her professional life serving the people of Bayou La Batre, a poor rural Alabama coastal community. She makes house calls, pays for patients' medicines, and works for free when there is no money. She's had heaps of honors poured on her head, including a MacArthur genius award. She rebuilt her clinic twice, once following Hurricane Katrina and then a year later when it was destroyed by a fire.”
This account alone, speaks to the continuing work we have ahead of us to ensure black women remain relevant and responsive to 21st century challenges and barriers as we collectively work to achieve our full potential.
I am proud to serve at the helm of our great organization, and with the talented and committed women from across the U.S. who constitutes our national board of directors. The local leadership of our chapters is central to us accomplishing our mission and elevating our agenda, and the national board looks forward to meeting and working with our chapter members in the years ahead. Many of our chapters are currently celebrating their 25th anniversary”: Baltimore, Northern Virginia, and St. Louis Chapters are but a few of these. This longevity confirms “we are here to stay, and our work will continue!”
With warmest regards,
