MAY YOU REST IN PEACE, DEAR EVELYN

25 January 1916 - 29 April 2010

“I think we find happiness in retrospect.  We don’t recognize it at the moment. I see the sun set every day from my home and that’s a moment of pure joy.”  Evelyn Cunningham, a founder of both the New York Coalition of 100 Black Women and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, shared this perspective in Essence magazine in 1999. And all who knew her marveled at her magnificent life and career. During her lifetime, she mentored many young women, including Jewell Jackson McCabe, NCBW’s first president, and Natatia Griffith, a current national board member.30evelyn_CA0-popup
Her career started after her graduation from Long Island University in 1943.  As the New York City editor of the Pittsburgh Courier, the largest and most influential African American newspaper in the country at the time, Cunningham covered all the major civil rights events of the 1950s and 1960s.  In this role, she interviewed Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X and many other prominent leaders.  In addition, she also branched out into radio journalism, becoming the commentator/host of “At Home with Evelyn Cunningham” on WLIB from 1961 to 1962.

After 1962, she pursued a post-journalism career as an activist and administrator, holding a series of public and private positions that included government appointments, board memberships and executive roles in various organizations for various projects.  She was appointed by the most influential politicians of the day—Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, Governors Nelson Rockefeller and Mario Cuomo and Mayor Dinkins.

Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and reared in her beloved Harlem, New York, Evelyn Cunningham died at Jewish Home and Hospital in Manhattan. Also known for her elegant style and the considerable influence that she wielded in several spheres, she will surely be missed.

NCBW PROMOTES LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT ABROAD

New International Women’s Advocacy Committee and Planned Projects Introduced at the 2010 Leadership Retreat   mp9004037751

NCBW plans to translate its mission and vision into global action was rolled out at the June retreat by the leadership of our new international advocacy committee.  This committee is championed by its national co-chairs, Cynthia Williams, president of Metro Atlanta Chapter and Natatia Griffith, national board member—both of whom have demonstrated a long-standing interest and commitment to elevating the NCBW profile and advocacy beyond our borders.  Other members of the international advocacy agenda leadership includes Dr. Patricia Hill Williams, the NCBW senior representative to the United Nations, and Dr. Corrine Anderson, founder of “Dear American Friend”, President of NCBW Central Mississippi chapter, and currently working in Liberia as part of the Rural Teachers Training Institute.

The national NCBW’s first organized effort to promote support for Black women abroad will take the form of transporting medical supplies and educational teaching aids to Liberia through the generous support of Firestone Rubber Company.  This shipment from national NCBW will build upon work already underway by our Metro Atlanta chapter and the work of members of our Central Mississippi chapter.

Greetings, one and all!

I pray this message finds everyone doing well, and each chapter in overdrive as we all gear up for a productive year.

The national board meeting of Jan 29-30 was substantive and fast-paced!  We met on the historic campus of Tougaloo College, an HBCU, with its 1st female president in its 100 year history; and she (Dr. Beverly Hogan) is a member of the NCBW and a past president of NCBW-Central Mississippi chapter!  And, the Central Mississippi chapter ensured the national leadership was treated royally!

The "action items" from the minutes will be available to our chapter presidents within a week or so, followed by the full text of the minutes in March.  In the meantime, one of the most significant items of discussion (and action) was the confirmation of our committee chairs. The standing committees are defined in our national by-laws, and periodically the organization benefits from one or more ad hoc committees.

With the leadership of our national committees now defined we have an expectation that each chapter president identify at least one national committee or initiative they wish to work with.  An org chart (link to come soon) is a graphic depiction of our committee structure, and I will link the report of our 2nd VP for Programs, Ms. Michele Emery, which provides great detail on our new and exciting  national partnerships. A link to her blog will be available soon as well. Also please find the national calendar as currently constituted.  The calendar will be updated as more events/dates become known to us.  And you will continue to get "breaking NCBW news" from the executive director, leadership, and committee chairs via email AND on tis site.  We also hope you will continue to share info with us.

NC100BW Mourns the Passing...
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women mourns the passing of Dr. Dorothy Height.
She was a trailblazer who defined the 20th-century black recent_workwomen's movement by demonstrating the necessity for a comprehensive advocacy effort framed and implemented by Black women for Black women.  As NCBW approaches its 30th anniversary, we remember that our organization and millions of  Black women owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Height and the National Council of Negro Women for its groundbreaking work spanning decades under her leadership.  The positions many of us hold in the 21st century are directly related to her work on our behalf for the better part of the 20th century. 2011 Biennial Conference

Indianapolis to Host Our 2011 Biennial Conference

The National Coalition of 100 Black Women (NC100BW) is excited as we begin to plan our 2011 Biennial Conference which will take place in the centrally located city of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Indianapolis is the capital city of Indiana, the 3rd largest city in the Midwest and well known for its Children’s Museum and Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.

NC100BW members will convene to celebrate 30 years of advocacy, leadership development, and gender equity in the areas of health, education and economic development.

The collective body will join together to conduct the business of the organization, elect new leadership, and adopt the resolutions that will guide the planning and programming efforts for the next two years. Educational sessions and forums will lift up pertinent subjects that are certain to enlighten, uplift, and generate thought provoking conversations.

NC100BW member Anita Harden will serve as national chair of the Biennial Planning Conference Committee while Colleen Bolden Smith will assume the leadership role for the host chapter in Indianapolis.

Together, they will ensure conference development, arrangements, logistics and execution.

The Biennial conference will bring together an extraordinary group of members, inspirational presenters, and special guests. Check this website often for the conference updates and details. We look forward to this exciting event and we encourage each of you to make plans to join us in October of 2011 for our 15th Biennial Conference.

Come tour the city, shop, engage in official coalition business and continue to "build partnerships through creative alliances".
